Accessions in the genebank are stored ex situ (outside their naural habitat), for example in field collections, in vitro, liquid nitrogen or in long-term storage chambers.
In situ storage is a type of conservation of genetic resources in natural populations of plant species, for example old fruit trees collections or protected species preserved in their natural habitats.
